Today's installment of "Good Idea, Bad Idea" (brought to the world originally by the Animaniacs) was brought on by a Twitter comment that included this link:

Now, in a way, I agree with them. It does seem like a good idea to me. If they did this with video games also, it might even clue parents in to what their children are really trying to get them to buy. That being said, there are some inherent problems with the idea.
First of all, ratings exist for a reason. Essentially, to let people know what the content of the video is, so they won't buy it if it's going to offend them, or it's not something they want their kids to see.
Second, simply covering the cover isn't going to lessen a minor's curiosity about it, and might even have the opposite affect.
Third, what's the point of covering up an image like that shown on Fight Club? Personally, I'd rather it be the horror movies that get their images covered up. The image on Saw is the stuff nightmares are made of (to me, at least) - I'd rather not see that, or let my (inexistent) children see that - can we get a cover for the movie jackets please?
I think, if it was applied properly, something like this could be good - cover up the covers for porn movies, and covers with very suggestive themes on them, and we should be good. But all of them?
Yeah, no.
